My First Student Assessment

Assessing Student Work

1. Upload a lesson plan and answer the following questions:

a. Describe the process leading up to your lesson plan.

i. Was this a joint effort between you and your cooperating teacher?

  • No, this was not a joint effort between my cooperating teacher and I. She gave me what needed to be shown to my students and I added one additional lab.

ii. What kind of hopes and dreams did you have for this lesson?

  • I wanted students to think about the daily consumption of lipids or fats in their lives. I wanted students to think about what they eat everyday and to be able to distinguish different types of foods with the vocabulary that was learned in class.

iii. How did this lesson fit into the larger unit you were teaching?

  • This lesson was the third macromolecule lesson in the unit. We essentially broke down macromolecules as a whole and every molecule had an individual lesson. This was the 3rd macromolecule out of the 4.

b. Describe how the lesson unfolded and how students reacted to the lesson.

  • If im being honest, the lesson felt like it didn’t go as well as I had wanted it to go. I believe that the execution on my end, went well. I had practiced and really learned my material and took into consideration what Dr. Gleason had told me to put in my lessons. But students didn’t participate, they didn’t engage. I went over questions beforehand, so that they could find the answers throughout the lesson (which were repeated several times) but they still didn’t seem to grasp the concept too well.

c. Discuss what you liked about the lesson, what went well and what you might change in the future should you do this lesson again.

  • What I believe went well was the addition of the lab I created on my own. It really showed the material overall and showed a visual component of the lesson that really pertained to the lives of the students. The things that I really want to change about the lesson (and something that I want to change overall) is having a “lazy” way of teaching material by relying on videos to explain everything to students. I believe that videos should be supplemental to actual lessons and discussion but not being the sole way of learning that students learn the material. The videos have too much information and in such a little amount of time that its almost impossible to grasp anything at all, especially students who are just starting to learn English.

2. Upload 3 pieces of student work (one from a student who met or exceeded the learning goals, one from a student who was close but still not quite there and one from a student who did not meet the learning goals) and answer the following questions:

a. Detail what you hoped this assignment would accomplish.

i. Why did you pick it or create it?

  • The reason I created the assignment was for students to be at least be able to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy fats, especially in food that they see everyday. I asked questions that the answers were repeated throughout the entire lesson.

ii. Why did you think it would reveal whether a student had mastered a

Concept?

  • I think it revealed if a student had payed attention to the lesson since I repeated the answers many times. If they wouldn’t have gotten it from the videos, they would have gotten it from vocabulary, or me explaining the lab. Students had multiple situations where they were explained the material in several different formats.

b. Describe each piece of student work and the assets each student displayed.

i. Is there a pattern that you see?

  • I notice when a student puts that they are tired or that they are feeling sad, they tend to not be interested in the lesson and it really affects their answers. I tend to notice a pattern in students whose answers are way off, they tend to be going through something else emotionally.

ii. Are there pieces that surprised you?

  • Yes, I thought some of my lesson were very clear and some answers were very random and it felt like I didn’t know where they got their answers.

c. Discuss what each student revealed about your teaching - their work is a

reflection of how well your lesson went.

  • Shannel and Christian showed that I did teach the material that was in the questions. The thing that really showed the difference between both students is how they interpreted the lab, and that could have been a misinformation on my end. Some of the information is tricky and needed students to critically think to get the answers correct. Alex on the other hand showed that his mind was somewhere else because he put that he was sad and no answers were right nor did they make sense.

d. Now that you have reviewed this work, what does each student need moving forward?

  • I think what Christian needs is more clarification on my end and to make sure I am guiding him to the correct answer. I need to ensure that any lab that I do, is clear and does not gear them towards the wrong direction. For Alex, I think we need to check in on him more and ensure that he’s feeling ok and what can we do to help him learn.

e. What do you plan to do as their teacher in order to ensure that all students have access to success?

  • I plan on using different materials for students to learn and not just relying on videos to teach the lesson. Having a labs really help students who are more visually inclined as well they tie in the lesson and help students critical thinking. Additionally, I want to check in on my students more and ensure that they are feeling well, or if there is something that I could do to help them feel safe.
