What is the definition of Sheltered Instruction?
Sheltered instruction is a teaching method. It employs a wide variety of strategies that a teacher uses to modify their instruction so that students can negotiate the value of the lesson, the language and the concepts.
Sheltered Instruction in Action is :
Teachers must understand the application of language, the acquisition of language, the stages of language development, what influences productivity, what influences negative productivity.
Teachers must also understand how culture influence student behaviors and outcomes.
The Four Cornerstones of Sheltered Instruction are:
Hands on activities
Guarded vocabulary
Visual Clues
Cooperative learning
Expectations of Sheltered Instruction:
Listening and speaking skills always precede reading and writing skills
Guard against concurrent translation
Understand where your students are relative to their language development
Expectations of Sheltered Instruction in Action are:
What level are students actually on?
Needs to make sure that students are actively participating
Trying to get language out and not language in
Every component of the lesson needs to be carefully considered and planned
Sheltered Instruction Strategies:
Show pictures and every time you say the name of the object or person, you emphasize it.
Show visual cues of the important dates and emphasize it. Pictures can help depict what it is.
Clarify important words. Use the word and then simplify it as much as you can
Use a lot of hand cues to visualise locations or actions
Comments
